Ground loops occur when2 or more pieces of equipment connect to "grounds"that have different voltage potentials (instead of a common voltage potential "ground" would suggest). If two pieces of audio equipment are plugged into different power outlets (say in the case where a subwoofer is connected somedistance from the AV system), there will often be a difference in their respective ground potentials creating the 50Hz mains hum we all hate.
